A coroner has ruled that an overdose of morphine played a part in the death of two babies in Stafford Hospital in November 2010 – aged just one day old.
The twins were born 13 weeks early on 30 October 2010 and the cause of death was given as “complications in extreme prematurity” but the coroner did acknowledge that the babies had received “sub-optimal treatment”.
Although the hospital had followed procedures after the premature birth of the twins there was confusion over how much morphine should be administered after the birth.
The deaths of the twins was “totally avoidable” according to their mother Ami Dean who believes her children would still be alive had they been at another hospital.
“[Their deaths] were down to human error, which is something I cannot cope with,” she said.
“I could have coped with them dying from prematurity, as that would have been nobody’s fault.”
Richard Follis, the family’s solicitor believes a “series of errors” led to the twins’ deaths and the family are pursuing a personal injury claim against Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust.
If you ever find yourself in a hospital then chances are that you will just be hoping that a medical professional can take care of you as quickly as possible to the best of their ability and in the majority of cases this is what will happen. Unfortunately this is not always the case, and doctors and nurses are only human, as a result you might find that you are the victim of a case of medical negligence which has left you with further injuries and costs to deal with.
Regardless of the circumstances you should never find yourself in a position where you have been left out of pocket through the negligence of another person and if you do find yourself in this position then you could be eligible to make a compensation claim against anyone who you feel has been directly negligent towards you.
